Tree removal in Wandin East
Wandin East is cherry and berry country on red soil, under one farm overlay from end to end. Unusually for the valley, much of it is outside the Bushfire Prone Area.

The rule in Wandin East
Every one of the 103 points we sampled in Wandin East was under SLO5, the red-soil farming overlay. Its permit takes in native vegetation of any size and any tree larger than:
- 1.1 m
- around the trunk at 1.3 m, a trunk of about 35 cm.
- 4 m
- The 4 m around a building is exempt, fences excepted.
SLO5 exempts young regrowth on lawfully cleared land, dead vegetation, pruning for health up to a third of a plant, the listed weeds, and windrows or woodlots removed under a property management plan the council has accepted.

Less than half bushfire-prone
Only 47 of the 103 points were in a Bushfire Prone Area, and only 7 were in the Bushfire Management Overlay. The 10/30 rule may or may not be available on your block; the property report says which. If it isn't, the overlay's 4 m is the distance that counts. How the 10/30 rule works.

Red soil and erosion
The district sits on fertile red soil, terra rossa, and grows cherries, strawberries, raspberries, apples and now wine grapes. SLO5's statement describes the same patchwork of small fields over hills and valleys. An erosion overlay came up at 32 points, and on that land any vegetation needs a permit unless it is a tree 50 cm or less around, within 2 m of a building, dead with the ground reinstated, or being lopped for health. Wandin Yallock Creek and Boggy Creek run through, and the flood overlay came up at 5 points.
