Tree removal in Seville

Seville's town has one tree rule. Its orchards and vineyards have two, which agree on everything except young regrowth.

The rule in Seville

Seville's township streets are under SLO22: all 16 of the residential points we sampled. SLO22 needs a permit for indigenous vegetation of any size and for any tree larger than this:

50 cm
around the trunk, 1.3 m up. A trunk of about 16 cm.
10 m2 m
Drawn to scale around a 12 m by 9 m house. The dashed ring is a state rule; the solid ring is a council overlay.
2 m
The first 2 m around a building is exempt. Overhanging branches can be cut back to leave 2 m clear of the house, garage or shed.
10 m
The 10/30 rule. All 16 town points were in a Bushfire Prone Area, and 243 of the 244 overall. The conditions.

Dead vegetation, pruning that helps a plant regenerate and the listed environmental weeds are exempt. DDO5, on the same streets, guides new buildings and needs no permit for a tree.

Orchards and vineyards: SLO5 and SLO6

Seville sits in the Yarra Valley wine region, and most of its land is farmed. Two landscape overlays cover the farms: SLO6 at 133 of our points and SLO5, the red-soil farming overlay, at 92. In one of the farming zones every point was SLO5.

What they share
A permit for native vegetation of any size and trees over 1.1 m around; exempt within 4 m of a building, dead vegetation, pruning for health up to a third of a plant, and planted windrows and woodlots removed under a property management plan.
Where they differ
SLO5 exempts regrowth under 10 years old on land lawfully cleared of native vegetation. SLO6 doesn't, so the same young wattles need a permit on one block and not on the next.

Checked 23 October 2026 against Yarra Ranges Planning Scheme, Schedule 5 to Clause 42.03 (SLO5) and Yarra Ranges Planning Scheme, Schedule 6 to Clause 42.03 (SLO6).

The erosion overlay

The erosion overlays came up at 46 points, all of them on farmland. Where one applies it is the stricter test: any vegetation needs a permit except a tree 50 cm or less around, anything within 2 m of a building, dead vegetation where the ground is put back, and lopping for a tree's health or stability. ESO1, at 41 points, keeps a permit for standing dead trees over 1.3 m around.

A post office that changed its name

Seville's first post office opened in 1884 as Wandin North, and was renamed. The town sits along the Warburton Highway and on the old railway line, now the Warburton Trail. St Paul's Church of England on the highway is a heritage place with tree controls.

The rule next door

Wandin North
SLO5 and SLO6 on the farms again, and SLO22 in its village.
Woori Yallock
SLO22 in town, SLO6 on most farms, and SLO2 and the flood overlay on its conservation land.
Seville East and Yellingbo
SLO6 at both centre points. SLO22 names Seville East with Seville and Woori Yallock as country towns.

Tell us where you are and what needs doing. We pass it to a local arborist who works in the Yarra Valley. They ring you back to talk about the job.

What's the job?

How tall the tree is, how close to the house, or whether you can get a truck in.

A photo of the whole tree and one of what's around it help with the quote.

Your name, number, what you write and your photos reach us by email and go on to a local arborist who works in the Yarra Valley, and to no one else. We keep a note that a request came in, with the time, the page, the suburb and the job, so we can count them. Privacy.
