Tree removal in Gladysdale

Gladysdale is old sawmilling country south of Yarra Junction, now farms and bush. One farm overlay and the bushfire rules cover nearly all of it.

The rule in Gladysdale

All 267 points we sampled in Gladysdale were in a Bushfire Prone Area, and 254 were under SLO6. On a Gladysdale block the council's permit usually covers native vegetation of any size and trees above:

1.1 m
circumference, 1.3 m above the ground. That's a trunk about 35 cm wide.
10 m4 m
Drawn to scale around a 12 m by 9 m house. The dashed ring is a state rule; the solid ring is a council overlay.
4 m
SLO6 exempts vegetation whose base is within 4 m of a building.
10 m
The 10/30 rule, and in the bushfire overlay, at 210 of the points, the 50 m rule for older houses. The conditions.

Regrowth has no exemption under SLO6; dead vegetation does, except where ESO1 holds a large standing dead tree.

Erosion-prone country

An erosion overlay came up at 52 points, most of them on the Rural Conservation land. Where it applies, any vegetation, shrubs included, needs a permit unless it is a tree 50 cm or less around, within 2 m of a building, dead with the ground put back, or being lopped for health. A Restructure Overlay at three points covers old subdivisions and controls building, not trees.

Slatey Creek, renamed for Gladys

The district was Slatey Creek until mail kept going to the other Slatey Creek near St Arnaud. The post office, opened in 1914, was renamed after Gladys Petitt, the postmistress's daughter. The mail came along the timber tramway from Powelltown to Yarra Junction, and sawmilling was the work.

SLO22 on the town blocks, SLO6 on the farms around them.

Tell us where you are and what needs doing. We pass it to a local arborist who works in the Yarra Valley. They ring you back to talk about the job.

What's the job?

How tall the tree is, how close to the house, or whether you can get a truck in.

A photo of the whole tree and one of what's around it help with the quote.

Your name, number, what you write and your photos reach us by email and go on to a local arborist who works in the Yarra Valley, and to no one else. We keep a note that a request came in, with the time, the page, the suburb and the job, so we can count them. Privacy.
