Tree removal in Hoddles Creek

Hoddles Creek is hill farms and forest south of the Yarra, under one farm overlay almost everywhere and the erosion overlay across a quarter of it.

The rule in Hoddles Creek

One overlay covers nearly all of Hoddles Creek: SLO6, at 466 of the 492 points we sampled. Every point was in a Bushfire Prone Area. SLO6 needs a permit for native vegetation of any size and for any tree bigger than:

1.1 m
around the trunk, 1.3 m above the ground, about 35 cm across.
10 m4 m
Drawn to scale around a 12 m by 9 m house. The dashed ring is a state rule; the solid ring is a council overlay.
4 m
From a building, the first 4 m is exempt.
10 m
The 10/30 rule, for a house built or approved before 10 September 2009. The conditions.

Dead vegetation is exempt, except a big standing dead tree where ESO1 also applies (299 points). Young regrowth is not exempt under SLO6.

A quarter of it on erosion-prone ground

An erosion overlay came up at 122 points, about a quarter of the locality, across the farming and conservation zones alike. On that land it is the tighter rule: any vegetation needs a permit unless it is a tree 50 cm or less around, within 2 m of a building, dead with the ground reinstated, or being lopped for health or stability. Digging out stumps there is works, and needs asking about first.

Vineyards, berries and tree farms

Hoddles Creek has vineyards, berry farms and tree farms. Under SLO6, planted windrows, woodlots and landscaping can be removed without a permit when the work follows a property management plan the council has accepted. The state's native vegetation clause applies alongside it on any block of 0.4 ha or more.

Hoddle's creek

The creek and the town are named for Robert Hoddle, who surveyed the area in 1844. The gold rush of the 1860s made it, and it was one of the larger mining fields in Victoria into the 1900s. Its post office went by the name Warburton for a few years in the 1870s. The primary school, founded in 1916, carries heritage tree controls.

Tell us where you are and what needs doing. We pass it to a local arborist who works in the Yarra Valley. They ring you back to talk about the job.

What's the job?

How tall the tree is, how close to the house, or whether you can get a truck in.

A photo of the whole tree and one of what's around it help with the quote.

Your name, number, what you write and your photos reach us by email and go on to a local arborist who works in the Yarra Valley, and to no one else. We keep a note that a request came in, with the time, the page, the suburb and the job, so we can count them. Privacy.
