Tree removal in Yarra Junction

Yarra Junction is often called the hub of the Upper Yarra. Every point we sampled, in town or out of it, was in a Bushfire Prone Area.

The rule in Yarra Junction

Every one of the 18 points we sampled in Yarra Junction's residential streets and low-density blocks was under SLO22, the township overlay. It needs a permit for indigenous vegetation of any size and for any tree over this size:

50 cm
around the trunk, 1.3 m above the ground. Roughly a 16 cm trunk.
10 m2 m
Drawn to scale around a 12 m by 9 m house. The dashed ring is a state rule; the solid ring is a council overlay.
2 m
SLO22 stops 2 m from a building. Branches over a house, garage or shed can be cut back until they are 2 m clear.
10 m
The 10/30 rule. All 195 points, town and country, were in a Bushfire Prone Area. The conditions.

Dead vegetation, pruning for regrowth and the council's listed weeds are exempt. SLO23's own description names Yarra Junction, but none of our points fell under it. If your report shows SLO23 rather than SLO22, the threshold is 80 cm.

The bushfire overlay in town

Six of the 18 town points were also under the Bushfire Management Overlay, five of them on the larger low-density blocks. A house in that overlay, if it is old enough, can have everything except trees cleared out to 50 m. The other town houses still have the 10 m and 30 m distances, because those depend only on the Bushfire Prone Area.

DDO6 and DDO8 cover parts of the town for the design of new buildings, and need no permit to remove a tree.

The valley floor

Most of the locality is green wedge farmland, 127 of our points, and SLO6 covered 105 of them. SLO2 covered the other 22. Both need a permit for native vegetation of any size and trees over 1.1 m around, with a 4 m exemption at a building. SLO2 exempts young regrowth on lawfully cleared land; SLO6 doesn't.

The flood overlay came up at 29 points. ESO1, at 61, keeps a permit for standing dead trees more than 1.3 m around.

Which junction

The name doesn't come from the Yarra and the Little Yarra meeting. It comes from the junction of the timber tramways with the railway: from 1913 to 1945 Yarra Junction was where the narrow-gauge Powelltown Tramway met the Warburton line. The station building was first built at Lilydale in 1888 and moved here in 1914, and it now houses the Upper Yarra Museum.

The old railway line, now the rail trail, carries heritage tree controls. Camp Eureka on Tarrango Road is on the Victorian Heritage Register, so Heritage Victoria has a say in changes there.

The rule next door

Warburton and Wesburn
Warburton's house blocks are SLO22 too, most of them under the erosion overlay as well. Wesburn's centre point was in the bushfire overlay.
Launching Place
Almost no landscape overlay on its town blocks, and three on its farms.
Gladysdale and Hoddles Creek
SLO6 farm country at their centre points.

What's the job?

How tall the tree is, how close to the house, or whether you can get a truck in.
