Tree removal in Gruyere
Gruyere is dairy-turned-orchard country around the Warramate Hills, and one farm overlay covers almost all of it.

The rule in Gruyere
Gruyere is farm country, and 564 of our 605 points were under SLO6. Every one was in a Bushfire Prone Area. On most blocks, then, a permit is needed for native vegetation of any size and for any tree beyond:
- 1.1 m
- trunk circumference at 1.3 m, or roughly a 35 cm trunk.
- 4 m
- SLO6 leaves the first 4 m around a building alone.
- 10 m
- The 10/30 rule around an older house. The conditions.
Only 223 points were in the Bushfire Management Overlay, so the 50 m rule reaches some houses here and not others. Your property report says whether yours is in it.

The Warramate Hills
SLO6's own statement picks out the Yarra Yarraloch Conservation Reserve on the Warramate Hills: a prominent, isolated range of forested hills flanked by the Yarra's floodplain. Some locals argue the area's proper name is Warramate, after them.
On the Rural Conservation land, 41 of 129 points were under SLO2 instead, which exempts regrowth under 10 years on cleared land; SLO6 doesn't. The flood overlay came up at 46 points, and an erosion overlay at 61, nearly half of them on the public conservation land.

Named for a cheese
The town takes its name from the cheese, because the district was dairy country. The post office opened as Cahillton in 1892 and became Gruyere in 1950. Apples, pears, cattle and wineries are the farming now. A planted windrow or woodlot on a farm can be removed under SLO6 when it follows a property management plan the council has accepted.
