Tree removal in Coldstream

Coldstream is mostly river flats and farms, with a small town in the middle. More than a quarter of it is under the flood overlay.

The rule in Coldstream

Coldstream's town is a small pocket of houses in a big farming locality. Only 7 of our 619 points fell in its residential streets, and all 7 were under SLO22. On those blocks the council's permit covers indigenous vegetation of any size and any tree over:

50 cm
around the trunk, 1.3 m above ground. That is a trunk of about 16 cm.
2 m
Drawn to scale around a 12 m by 9 m house.
2 m
Nothing within 2 m of a building is caught, and overhanging branches can come back to a 2 m gap.

SLO23's description names Coldstream too, with an 80 cm threshold, but none of our points fell under it. The state's canopy-tree rule applies on these streets as well: a tree 5 m tall with a 4 m canopy needs a permit if its trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary. Only 1 of the 7 town points was in a Bushfire Prone Area, against 589 of 619 across the locality.

A floodplain suburb

The flood overlay came up at 170 points, more than a quarter of the locality, nearly all of it on the farmland. It needs a permit for buildings and works, a new fence included, but not for removing a tree; clause 62.02 keeps vegetation removal out of a works permit. Filling a hole where a tree came out, or raising a building pad, is works.

Checked 23 October 2026 against Victoria Planning Provisions, Clause 44.04 (Land Subject to Inundation Overlay) and Victoria Planning Provisions, Clause 62.02 (buildings and works not requiring a permit).

SLO2 on the flats, SLO6 beside it

Of the 541 points in the main farming zone, 337 were under SLO2, the open valley landscape, and 204 under SLO6. Both catch native plants of any size and trees thicker than 1.1 m around, with an exemption 4 m out from a building. SLO2 lets young regrowth on lawfully cleared land go; SLO6 has no such exemption. ESO1 came up at 102 points, with its permit for standing dead trees over 1.3 m around.

Melba, Yering and the railway

The town grew around the station after the railway came in 1888; before that the place was called The Lodge. Two homes here are on the Victorian Heritage Register: Chateau Yering, the old Yering homestead, and Coombe Cottage, Dame Nellie Melba's home from 1909 to 1931. The local fire brigade was set up after the serious fires of 1962.

Several Coldstream heritage places carry tree controls, nearly all on private land: old homesteads, the ruins of the St Hubert's stables and wine cellar, and an Aboriginal canoe tree protected together with the ground within 10 m of it. If your block has a Heritage Overlay, the property report gives its number.

DDO5 on the residential streets and DDO20 in the town centre shape new buildings, and need no permit for a tree.

What's the job?

How tall the tree is, how close to the house, or whether you can get a truck in.

A photo of the whole tree and one of what's around it help with the quote.

Your name, number, what you write and your photos reach us by email and go on to a local arborist who works in the Yarra Valley, and to no one else. We keep a note that a request came in, with the time, the page, the suburb and the job, so we can count them. Privacy.
