The rule in Yellingbo

Yellingbo has one landscape overlay, everywhere: SLO6 came up at all 485 points we sampled. Its permit covers native plants of every size, and any tree past:

1.1 m
around, at 1.3 m up the trunk. Around 35 cm in diameter.
10 m4 m
Drawn to scale around a 12 m by 9 m house. The dashed ring is a state rule; the solid ring is a council overlay.
4 m
Nothing within 4 m of a lawfully built building needs it, and branches may come back to 4 m clear.
10 m
The 10/30 rule: 484 of the 485 points were in a Bushfire Prone Area. The conditions.

SLO6 has no exemption for regrowth. ESO1 came up at 212 points and keeps a permit for large standing dead trees.

The helmeted honeyeater's reserve

The Yellingbo Nature Conservation Reserve runs as a chain of streamside bush along Woori Yallock, Cockatoo and Sheep Station Creeks. SLO6's statement names it as habitat for the helmeted honeyeater, and it holds the last wild population of that bird, the state's emblem. Leadbeater's possum lives there too. 87 of our points fell on the public conservation land.

Claxton, then Parslow's Bridge, then Yellingbo

The town grew around James Claxton's store, opened in 1883 beside Woori Yallock Creek, and was called Claxton. His family later built a bridge there, and it became Parslow's Bridge. In 1946 it was renamed Yellingbo, after the last Aboriginal resident; the word means "today" in Woiwurrung.

Tell us where you are and what needs doing. We pass it to a local arborist who works in the Yarra Valley. They ring you back to talk about the job.

What's the job?

How tall the tree is, how close to the house, or whether you can get a truck in.

A photo of the whole tree and one of what's around it help with the quote.

Your name, number, what you write and your photos reach us by email and go on to a local arborist who works in the Yarra Valley, and to no one else. We keep a note that a request came in, with the time, the page, the suburb and the job, so we can count them. Privacy.
