Tree removal in Tarrawarra

Tarrawarra is farmland in a bend of the Yarra, home to an abbey and a winery. Two farm overlays cover it, and the flood overlay reaches a third of it.

The rule in Tarrawarra

Tarrawarra is almost all farmland: 145 of our 150 points. SLO2 came up at 129 points and SLO6 at 21. Both need the council's permit for native vegetation of any size, and for a tree beyond:

1.1 m
around the trunk at 1.3 m, or about 35 cm through.
10 m4 m
Drawn to scale around a 12 m by 9 m house. The dashed ring is a state rule; the solid ring is a council overlay.
4 m
Both overlays exempt vegetation within 4 m of a building.
10 m
The 10/30 rule: all 150 points were in a Bushfire Prone Area. The conditions.

SLO2 exempts regrowth under 10 years on lawfully cleared land; SLO6 doesn't. Only 8 points were in the Bushfire Management Overlay, so the 50 m rule rarely applies.

Slow waters

The name is Aboriginal and refers to slow waters, the arc of the Yarra here. The flood overlay came up at 50 points. It controls building and works on the floodplain, not the removal of a tree, though filling or reshaping ground is works.

Syme's estate and the abbey

This was the View Hill estate until David Syme, owner of The Age, bought it in 1893 and renamed it. In 1954 Cistercian monks from Ireland bought part of it and founded Tarrawarra Abbey, where they run a beef farm. Another part is now the TarraWarra Estate winery and museum of art. The old slab cottage at the abbey, The Elms, carries heritage tree controls.

Tell us where you are and what needs doing. We pass it to a local arborist who works in the Yarra Valley. They ring you back to talk about the job.

What's the job?

How tall the tree is, how close to the house, or whether you can get a truck in.

A photo of the whole tree and one of what's around it help with the quote.
