Tree removal in Yering
Yering is river flats where the valley's first vines were planted. One landscape overlay covers all of it, and the flood overlay most of it.

The rule in Yering
Yering is the open valley at its most open. All 277 of the points we sampled were under SLO2, the "open valley landscape", and all were in a Bushfire Prone Area. SLO2 needs a permit for native vegetation and for any tree over:
- 1.1 m
- around at 1.3 m, a trunk near 35 cm across. Exotic trees under that size are not covered.
- 4 m
- Vegetation based within 4 m of a building, fences aside, is exempt.
- 10 m
- The 10/30 rule for an older house. The conditions. Only 20 points were in the Bushfire Management Overlay.
SLO2 exempts regrowth under 10 years on land lawfully cleared of native vegetation, unless it was cleared by flood or fire, and windrows removed under a property management plan the council has accepted.

Nearly three-quarters flood overlay
The flood overlay came up at 199 of the 277 points. It needs a permit for buildings and works, but clause 62.02 keeps tree removal out of a works permit. Taking out a tree on the flats is a question for SLO2. Filling the hole, reshaping the ground or building a pad is a question for the flood overlay as well.
A Restructure Overlay at 12 points marks old subdivisions where building is limited. It doesn't control trees.

The first vines
Yering was the local Aboriginal name for the area. The Ryrie brothers drove their stock here from the Monaro in 1837 and planted the valley's first vines. The de Castella and de Pury families later founded Yeringberg and St Hubert's on the property, and in 1889 Yering won a Grand Prix at the Paris Exhibition. Some of those old properties carry heritage tree controls today. Lilydale Airport and a golf club, each in a special use zone, sit inside the locality too.
