Tree removal in Badger Creek

Badger Creek is farms and bush between Healesville and Woori Yallock, with Coranderrk and the sanctuary inside its boundary. One farm overlay covers most of it.

The rule in Badger Creek

Badger Creek has no town zoning in our sample: all 129 points were farm, bush, reserve or catchment, and 117 of them were under SLO6. On a Badger Creek block, then, the council's permit usually covers native vegetation of any size and any tree over:

1.1 m
around the trunk, 1.3 m above the ground. About a 35 cm trunk.
10 m4 m
Drawn to scale around a 12 m by 9 m house. The dashed ring is a state rule; the solid ring is a council overlay.
4 m
Exempt within 4 m of a lawfully built building. Branches over it can be cut to 4 m clear.
10 m
The 10/30 rule. Every point was in a Bushfire Prone Area, and most in the Bushfire Management Overlay. The conditions.

SLO6 has no exemption for regrowth, so wattles and young gums in a paddock need its permit. Dead vegetation is exempt, but ESO1, at 82 points, keeps a permit for a standing dead tree over 1.3 m around. On a farm-sized block the state's native vegetation clause applies as well.

Coranderrk and the sanctuary

The former Aboriginal reserve of Coranderrk is now the Coranderrk Bushland, and its station track, water race and sawmill site carry heritage tree controls. So does the Sir Colin MacKenzie Sanctuary, better known as Healesville Sanctuary; MacKenzie Cottage there is on the Victorian Heritage Register. A block next to either can share its overlays, so check the report.

The creek and the weir

The creek may be named for the wombats early settlers called badgers. Other accounts trace it to a Woi Wurrung word, badjurr, or to a horse of the Ryrie brothers that got bogged in it. The weir in the Badger Creek reserve was built in 1909 and feeds the Silvan Reservoir.

An erosion overlay came up at 17 of our points. Where one applies, it needs a permit for any vegetation except a tree 50 cm or less around, anything within 2 m of a building, dead vegetation where the ground is reinstated, and lopping for a tree's health.
