Tree removal in Woori Yallock

Woori Yallock is a small town in a big farming locality. The town has the township tree rule; the farms and the creek country around it have two others.

The rule in Woori Yallock

In the town, the rule is SLO22. All 9 of the points we sampled in Woori Yallock's residential streets were under it. It needs a permit for indigenous vegetation of any size, and for any tree over this size:

50 cm
around the trunk, 1.3 m above the ground. About a 16 cm trunk.
10 m2 m
Drawn to scale around a 12 m by 9 m house. The dashed ring is a state rule; the solid ring is a council overlay.
2 m
Nothing within 2 m of a building needs SLO22's permit. Limbs hanging over the house, garage or shed may be trimmed until there is 2 m of clearance.
10 m
The 10/30 rule, outside the town. Only 4 of the 9 town points were in a Bushfire Prone Area, but 290 of all 297 were. The conditions.

SLO22 also exempts dead vegetation, pruning for regrowth and the environmental weeds list. DDO5 covers the same streets, for the design of new buildings; it needs no permit to remove a tree.

Checked 23 October 2026 against Yarra Ranges Planning Scheme, Schedule 22 to Clause 42.03 (SLO22), Victoria Planning Provisions, Clause 52.12 (bushfire protection exemptions) and Yarra Ranges Planning Scheme, Schedule 5 to Clause 43.02 (DDO5).

The farms: mostly SLO6

SLO6 was the overlay at 204 of our 297 points, nearly all of them in the green wedge farming zones. Its permit takes in native vegetation of any size and trees more than 1.1 m around, with a 4 m exemption around buildings and no exemption for regrowth. Windrows and woodlots someone planted are exempt when their removal follows a property management plan approved by the council.

ESO1 came up at 96 points. It doesn't cover exotic trees, but it keeps a permit for a standing dead tree more than 1.3 m around the trunk, which SLO6 alone would let go.

Checked 23 October 2026 against Yarra Ranges Planning Scheme, Schedule 6 to Clause 42.03 (SLO6) and Yarra Ranges Planning Scheme, Schedule 1 to Clause 42.01 (ESO1).

Conservation land, the creek and the flood overlay

The Rural Conservation land in our sample, 48 points, was mostly under the flood overlay (37) and SLO2, the open valley overlay (36). SLO2's tree terms are SLO6's, except that it exempts regrowth under 10 years on lawfully cleared land, unless the land was cleared by flood or fire.

SLO6's own statement names the Yellingbo Nature Conservation Reserve, a chain of streamside bush along Woori Yallock, Cockatoo and Sheep Station Creeks that is habitat for the endangered helmeted honeyeater.

The flood overlay came up at 66 points in all. It needs a permit for buildings and works, but not for removing a tree. Filling or reshaping the ground near the creek is works.

Checked 23 October 2026 against Yarra Ranges Planning Scheme, Schedule 2 to Clause 42.03 (SLO2), Yarra Ranges Planning Scheme, Schedule 6 to Clause 42.03 (SLO6), Victoria Planning Provisions, Clause 44.04 (Land Subject to Inundation Overlay) and Victoria Planning Provisions, Clause 62.02 (buildings and works not requiring a permit).

The town

Woori Yallock's post office opened in 1886, spelt Woori Yalloak, and took the present spelling around 1911. The Warburton Trail, the walking and cycling track on the old railway line, runs past the town.

Seville
SLO22 in its streets too, and SLO6 and the red-soil SLO5 on its farms.

SLO6 farm country: 117 of Badger Creek's 129 points, and Gruyere's centre.
