Tree removal in Launching Place

In Launching Place the town and the country follow different rules. Most of the town blocks we sampled had no landscape overlay, while the farms around them had three.

The rule in Launching Place

Launching Place's town streets are unusual for the valley. Of the 11 points we sampled in its residential zone, only one carried a landscape overlay. On most town blocks, then, the tree rules that apply are the state's:

5 m
tall, with a canopy at least 4 m across: a canopy tree under the state's rule for residential zones.
6 m
from the narrowest street frontage, or 4.5 m from the rear boundary. On a lot with a house, a canopy tree with its trunk inside either distance needs a permit. On a vacant lot, any canopy tree does.
10 m
Drawn to scale around a 12 m by 9 m house.
10 m
The 10/30 rule. All 401 points were in a Bushfire Prone Area. Around a house built or approved before 10 September 2009, trees within 10 m and other vegetation within 30 m can go without a permit. The conditions.

Dead canopy trees are exempt. On a block of 0.4 ha or more, the state's native vegetation clause needs a permit for indigenous plants as well. None of that means a given tree is free to go: overlays are mapped block by block, so check your own property report first.

The larger blocks

Three points fell in the Low Density Residential Zone, with no overlay at all. The canopy-tree rule doesn't apply in that zone, so the state's bushfire and native vegetation clauses are the ones left to check. NRZ5, the town's residential schedule, deals with siting and setbacks, not trees. A VicPlan property report shows which zone your block is in.

Checked 23 October 2026 against Yarra Ranges Planning Scheme, Schedule 5 to Clause 32.09 (NRZ5), Victoria Planning Provisions, Clause 52.37 (canopy trees) and Victoria Planning Provisions, Clause 52.17 (native vegetation).

Outside town: three landscape overlays

The farms and bush around the town are a different matter. SLO6 came up at 251 points, SLO2 at 98 and SLO4, the ranges valleys overlay, at 38. All three catch native vegetation of any size and trees over 1.1 m around, and all three exempt 4 m around a building. SLO2 and SLO4 exempt young regrowth on lawfully cleared land; SLO6 doesn't. ESO1 sat over 230 of the points.

The Bushfire Management Overlay covered 256 points, none of them in the residential zones, and the flood overlay 64.

Where the logs went in

The name is thought to come from the spot on the Yarra where cut logs were launched into the river and floated down to the sawmills in Melbourne. The town had a station on the Warburton line from 1901 to 1965, and the rail trail now runs through the town.

Woori Yallock and Yarra Junction
Both have SLO22 on their town streets, with its 50 cm threshold, where Launching Place mostly has none.
Millgrove
The same residential schedule and no landscape overlay in town, but in the bushfire overlay.

SLO6 farm country at their centre points.
